A great read and true adventure motorcycling. Just a great book.

Wonderful feat by two amazing women and in 1934 even more so! The language is not particularly poetic but the sheer nature of the trek through the continent of Africa deserves it my four stars. It's an easy read and an eye-opener on many colonial facts - the SATT, the legion francaise, the British empire, the segregation in South Africa and the poverty of West Africa, the pigmies etc etc. Their future independent lives and active contributions to the second world wars attests to their determination and inventiveness in a traditionally male dominated (even today) environment. A great book with a strong legacy for all women to go out and make your dreams come true no matter what! English Such an inspiring story of adventure. I stumbled across this in my local library had to buy a copy to come back to after reading it. A truly different Africa to today, still heavily under European occupation at the time, between the two World Wars. Also a wonderful comparison to Lois Pryce making a similar trip on a motorbike in recent years. Just fascinating. I would a love mini series about this to introduce more people to this woman. My best adventures are the ones where I don't know enough to scare myself off about potential hardship and danger. I'm pretty sure that's how Wallach & Blenkiron ended up on this fantastic (but grueling and dangerous!) journey. Wallach's voice is so matter-of-fact that I had to read some sections twice to get the full impact of what immense obstacle or critical roadside repair had been achieved. Also an interesting record of old school colonial Africa.

If you're looking for a more thoughtful take on a similar motorcycle trip, try Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon. Can't find a copy of this anywhere but would like to read it! It's a story about the author and another woman's journey across Africa on motorcycles in the '30s. Anyone have any ideas on where to find it? I've searched links online and the closest library that has a copy is Washington DC!! Kindle Edition Real eye-opener.
