Was an advanced civilization lost to history in the global cataclysm that ended the last Ice Age? Graham Hancock, the internationally bestselling author, has made it his life's work to find out--and in America Before, he draws on the latest archaeological and DNA evidence to bring his quest to a stunning conclusion.

We've been taught that North and South America were empty of humans until around 13,000 years ago - amongst the last great landmasses on earth to have been settled by our ancestors. But new discoveries have radically reshaped this long-established picture and we know now that the Americas were first peopled more than 130,000 years ago - many tens of thousands of years before human settlements became established elsewhere.

Hancock's research takes us on a series of journeys and encounters with the scientists responsible for the recent extraordinary breakthroughs. In the process, from the Mississippi Valley to the Amazon rainforest, he reveals that ancient New World cultures share a legacy of advanced scientific knowledge and sophisticated spiritual beliefs with supposedly unconnected Old World cultures. Have archaeologists focused for too long only on the Old World in their search for the origins of civilization while failing to consider the revolutionary possibility that those origins might in fact be found in the New World?

America Before: The Key to Earths Lost Civilization

At some 600 pages including appendices, extensive notes and an index, it is a bit of a heavyweight, but well worth it for the excellent colour photographs and maps, plans and other illustrations. I was so impressed, that I immediately ordered the Kindle version which is a lot easier to handle! It is great to have both the hardback and the Kindle version, and to have both open at the same time to check references and other details. That way, I managed to read the book in three days (including appendices). Things have certainly moved on a bit since I first read Graham Hancock's earlier works, but there is obviously so much for us all to learn. It is a pity that it has taken so long for the academic establishment to start thinking outside the box, or even consider what others have to say and actually look at all the evidence. Hopefully, things will become a bit clearer in the next decade or so (while some of us old folks are still around). It is obvious that hominins (in various forms) have been around for hundreds of thousands of years (if not millions of years) in almost every part of the world (possibly including parts of Antarctica as well). Remember that we are the descendants of the survivors. Others were not so lucky and got wiped out by catastrophic events, and climate change (and lack of food). We may not have physical evidence (at the moment), but genetic testing of DNA around the world is throwing up all sorts of unexpected things (like the connection between Australasia and South America), and LIDAR is showing us even sites to investigate (in the basin in particular, but also in various deserts).I didn't realise that there were so many earthworks, mounds it is much appreciated. America Before: The Key to Earths Lost Civilization I can highly recommend this latest book from Graham Hancock. A worthy addition to the other major works in the ‘series’, it presents much new material and updates important evidential research. The main, and hugely important, aspect of the series of books commencing with ‘Fingerprints’ is the way they draw together cutting edge research, and dust off half forgotten anomalies across a multitude of disciplines, and present it for the educated layman, and perhaps some open minded academics too, in an intriguing and very readable way. Hancock need not be fearful of losing a comfortable academic sinecure, research grants and the possibility being quietly replaced by someone a little ‘sound’… The books often read like a classic “who dunnit” and this one is no exception. In the absence of a ‘United Nations’ of academia to openly and fearlessly correlate and cross fertilise areas of research, these books tie together outstanding, provocative and insightful studies of what and why things might appear as they, often ideas which are casualties of hierarchical academic conservatism, yes there is a degree of speculation, but it is, in my own opinion, invariably perceptive and sound. The chapters ‘Eloise’, ‘Fire and Ice’ and ‘Cape Fear’ in America One are remarkable expositions â€" and very happy that they pose a solution to the demise of the Beresovka mammoth (qv), even if it may not be contemporaneous with the YDIH event… worth a book in their own right!I differ with GH on some points along the way, as in this last book for example. I concede there would logically have been important ‘hubs’, but the idea of the Lost Culture as a centralised state with a ‘homeland’, I have long thought unlikely… it seems to me this civilisation, almost totally obliterated, was probably poly cultural, was probably primarily coastal, and that this is how humans spread around the planet, an idea GH has already covered in ‘Underworld’… but we must keep open minds. See what you think!CK Graham Hancock This is a very thorough volume, but not one that I enjoyed as much as his previous books. It goes into too much unnecessary detail in many areas and reads like a scientific paper at times. It's not a problem as such and I'm sure many will see the immense detail as a good thing, but personally I found myself skim reading large chunks of this book, even areas in which I am quite well versed. I studied genetics at university but I still found the huge volume of detail as pertains to the genetic history of the Americas to be too in depth. There is also a lot of time spent repeating verbatim the communications of various political allies and foes of the various sciences and this became tedious after a while we get the point! But overall you have to congratulate the author for going into so much depth and that's not even taking into account the vast notes at the back of the book. It's better to have the choice of what to read and what not to.Sadly there is some vulgar language, unnecessary in the written word, when the author speaks narratively of tragic personal events surrounding his investigations. From previous books and blogs, it is clear that the author has undergone some dark spiritual experiences and there is a negative energy running through this book. One must not lose track of the fact that this great lost civilisation the author admires so much ended due to corruption (as told in Plato's Atlantis and every subsequent religious text). Though the author seems to place doubt on such a cause, all the evidence that we have of human sacrifice and other degenerate behaviour as even witnessed in this book is quite damning. At the end of the day one has to decide what spiritual forces have been in play for thousands of years, forces to which the author had clearly testified over the years. He frequently speaks of the narrow minded views and positions of archeologists, but in this book he takes this position himself with regards to religion, not realising that his sometimes justified critiques are not ubiquitous throughout the religious world. I found it interesting that he stated there was 49 years between a key moment in his rebellious childhood and the beginning of a new affliction that now plagues him, for this is 7x7, a key sign in divine numerology. It is as though some great power is trying to get his attention. In a previous book he spoke of the tremendous fear he experienced when encountering certain evil spirits and I hope that the author can find a true spiritual path and learn from the mistakes of the civilisation that he is investigating. The reason, not the method of their destruction, is what we would should be focused on.In the meantime, Graham does a great service to the archeological record and this is a book I'd recommend. From the moment I opened this book, I was hooked I couldn't put it down. There is so much new information packed into this, fairly lengthy, read. If you've enjoyed his previous writings, you're going to love this one too. What are you waiting for? It's a steal at this price! A brilliant culmination of 25 years of work. Eloquent , elegant and sublime writing. A well presented thoroughly documented book that tackles some difficult questions regarding human prehistory. Cultural and genetic inheritance and similarities are challenged and reevaluated in light of new data from a variety of disciplines including Anthropology , Geology , Paleontology and Genetics. Many of Graham Hancocks previous books are uncanny in their validation of this wonderful book. writing
